He is surprisd to find that there was a story and a photo of Mr. Markham in the Journal. Mr. Markham was suppose to have taken the photo at Mr. Love's. It was at his suggestion that the photo was to be taken at Mr. Love's. And the story and photo be published together. Now he asks what happened because he is put in an embarrassing position.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
